Seasonal Depression & Your Emotional Wellness (+ Free Wallpaper Download)

We don’t talk about emotional wellness enough, and that’s about to change because October is Emotional Wellness Month! 

This topic is so important because your emotional wellness can impact every part of your life; the way you think, the way you cope, etc. Your emotions can negatively or positively affect your physical wellness, too. But what exactly is emotional wellness?

What is Emotional Wellness?

Emotional wellness is your ability to process a range of emotions while taking on your day-to-day schedule. It sometimes feels like a balancing act or a struggle, but when properly maintained, emotional wellness can open up positive avenues for you.

Just in 2011, a Harvard study showed that mindfulness and meditation yield positive impacts on the brain. What’s remarkable about this study is that meditation and mindfulness were observed as responsible for creating new gray matter in the brain. This gray matter helps with emotional intelligence, improved memory, and more.

Why should you care about Emotional Wellness now (and in October of all months)?

According to the Mayo Clinic, there’s a type of depression that’s connected with the changes in seasons. It’s called seasonal affective disorder; ironically coined as SAD for short. The majority of those with SAD see symptoms start in the fall and continue into the winter months. Mayo Clinic explains that SAD cases are infrequent in the spring or summer seasonal changes.

During Emotional Wellness Month, you have the opportunity to tighten the grip on your reigns, if not be aware of the possible dips in your emotional and mental wellness as the seasons change.

Intentions For the Month

Here are some intentions to consider for the month of October in the form of affirmations:

  • I choose to protect my peace every day.
  • I may be healing yesterday, I may be crying today; but both days, I’m not giving up.
  • I am doing more than surviving. I’m living.

This month is all about being mindful about how you take care of yourself because you’re unsure of what cold winds you should brace yourself for in the months to come. Don’t lose sight of who you are and if seasonal depression strikes, repeat this affirmation to yourself:


I am smart.
I am kind.
I am brave.
I am beautiful.
Today is a great day.

How to Set Up (Mac Users):

  1. Download this file: Click Here
  2. Save the file to Pictures folder on your Mac.
  3. Click the Apple Menu and select System Preferences.
  4. Go to Desktop & Screensaver.
  5. In the left panel, go to Folders > Pictures.
  6. Select the downloaded image.
  7. Look at the wallpaper and repeat the affirmation aloud 3 times daily.

  3. Open the folder and right click on the downloaded file.
  4. Select Set Desktop Wallpaper.

How to Set Up (PC/Windows Users):

  2. Click the Windows icon on the bottom of the screen.
  3. Select Settings > Personalization.
  4. Click on Background.
  5. Set the dropdown to Picture and click Browse beneath the images that appear.
  6. Select the downloaded file.
  7. Look at the wallpaper and repeat the affirmation aloud 3 times daily.
